Robert Smalls was an African American who was enslaved during and after the Civil War of America, gained freedom and became the pilot of the ship, sea captain and hence a politician. He freed himself, his families and crew from the slavery on May 13, 1862, by the means of commandeering a confederate ship transport, in Charleston harbor, moving it from Confederate-controlled waters to the blockade of United States. Smalls thereafter founded the Republican Party of South Carolina. The ‘Red Shirts’ were white supremacist paramilitary groups of Southern United State that were active in the late 19th century in the final years and after the end of the era of reconstruction of the United States. The Red Shirt groups came from Mississippi, when Democratic Party private terror units adopted red shirts to make themselves more visible to the Southern Republicans, both the freedmen and white. Finally, The Compromise of 1877 was purported unwritten and informal deal that settled the disputed intensity in the year 1876 in United States presidential election. The Compromise of 1877 did not help the African Americans at all. Instead as it was agreed, it allowed Hayes to win the presidential election of 1877. It did eventually have one democratic president elected (Cleveland) between the years 1865 and 1912.
